The River of Hope: Child-centred approaches to HIV and AIDS

Discussion at the SIPAA newsletter workshop, Kenya

This resource manual has been written for people working with children and young people (aged 8-18) in communities affected by HIV and AIDS. It is intended principally for those programme managers who support, guide and train community-based facilitators and teachers.

The manual aims to provide a resource of ideas, experiences and practical activities that will encourage children and young people to help each other understand and cope with the impact of HIV and AIDS.

The manual was developed from the experiences of a group of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Kenya, Uganda and the UK. It has a child-centred perspective, which presents strategies for the effective participation of children. While the manual seeks to offer practial ideas which have worked in specific communities in Kenya and Uganda, there is no single model that will fit all contexts. As such, the manual should be viewed as a resource, or a bag of ideas. Some will be appropriate in particualar contexts and some will not.
