Healthlink Worldwide and four partner’s developed and implemented the Enhancing HIV/AIDS Communication in Sub-Saharan Africa project.
Funding for the three-year project came from the ICCO, HIVOS and Misereor. The four partners were:
Southern African AIDS Information Dissemination Service
(SAfAIDS), Zimbabwe
Established in 1994, SAfAIDS is a regional HIV and AIDS
organisation based Harare, Zimbabwe. Its goal is to disseminate HIV and
AIDS information to promote, inform and support appropriate responses to
the epidemic.
SAfAIDS strengths have been built over 10 years of experience in the region working in collaboration with various stake-holders in the region who include intermediary organisations and communities. It is these strategic linkages and partnerships that have assisted and contributed to SAfAIDS building up relevant and quality information. SAfAIDS produces print and electronic materials including translation of some of its publications into Portuguese and French.
Family AIDS Caring Trust (FACT), Zimbabwe
FACT is a Christian-based organisation working with various communities
in Manicaland and throughout Zimbabwe, to provide HIV prevention programmes,
training and care for the whole person. FACT aims to become a renowned
organisation working towards the elimination and mitigation of the
impact of HIV and AIDS. To achieve this vision, FACT facilitates the
formation and builds the capacity of community based organisations
in Zimbabwe and in the Southern African region.
FACT has approximately 1000 volunteers, built up since 1987 when the organisation started. Its large volunteer base and emphasis on developing community ownership of programmes ensures the sustainability and continuity of its work.
Kenya AIDS NGO Consortium (KANCO)
KANCO is a national consortium of civil society organisations in Kenya that
exists to provide and promote leadership, solidarity and collaboration
among its members for collective action towards effective responses to
HIV and AIDS.
In the late 1980s, Community Based Organisations who had begun responding to HIV and AIDS came together to share learning experiences. Consultantions culminated in the establishment of KANCO in 1990 as a formal networking system for CSOs in Kenya. To date, the membership has grown to over 850 Community Based Organisations.
Hiwot HIV/AIDS Prevention Care
and Support Organisation (HAPCSO), Ethiopia
The Hiwot AIDS Prevention, Care and Support Organization (HAPSCO) was established
in December 1999 by Tibebe Maco, a nurse who had seen the impact HIV and
AIDS was having in Ethiopia. The organisation works mainly in the slum areas
on the outskirts of Addis Abeba. HAPCSO implements a range of programmes
including home based care, income generation and orphan support targeting
families, young people and health professionals.
