Lunchtime discussions have been running since 2001 at Healthlink Worldwide to explore and open up key health communication issues. Originally an integral part of the Exchange networking and learning programme, the discussions now run as part of Healthlink Worldwide’s activities.
People from a wide range of backgrounds have discussed topics from capacity development, integrated communication, and learning and evaluation, to social mobilisation and grassroots communication.
The success of the discussions demonstrates the value of face-to-face interaction; all the events share an informal atmosphere, which encourages networking before and after a presentation by a guest speaker.
Although very different in content all the discussions have been led by professionals with innovative and interesting ideas to share. In the past these have included Northern based professionals, for example Dr Robin Vincent, who shared his findings on universal access to HIV and AIDS treatment, written for PANOS, UK. Speakers have also come from overseas partner organisations; recently anti-people trafficking NGO Maiti Nepal ran an engaging discussion on advocacy, awareness and community sensitisation.
Each discussion is written up and a short report is available by email or online after the event. The analysis can be taken as stand alone information or, more usually, is used in conjunction with other supporting materials such as Findings papers or Key lists of relevant resources. Together with the network of like-minded people, the lunchtime discussions help create a community of practice around the topics being discussed.
